your gums and your health

The key elements to prevention of gum disease are proper nutrition, proper home care (brushing and flossing) and regular check-ups and dental cleanings. Even though gum disease is the prime reason for loss of teeth and has been linked to heart disease, not everyone is motivated to care for their teeth and gums properly.

At DentaSpa Holistic Dentistry, we stress an approach to the treatment of periodontal disease that emphasizes nutrition, calculus (tartar) removal, appropriate antibiotic therapy and scheduled cleanings and assessment at fixed time intervals.

Our approach to treatment of periodontal (gum) disease is non-surgical. Our services include scaling and root planing, that is to say, removing plaque and calculus and smoothing the root surfaces of the teeth. Antibiotics may be used to supplement the beneficial effects of scaling and root planing. Once treatment is completed and your gums are healthy, we teach you the proper methods for maintain your periodontal health. After all, our philosophy is that prevention of disease is more beneficial than continual treatment and retreatment.

The one exception to our non-surgical approach to peridontal treatment is what we like to call "smile line surgery." Atraumatic smile line surgery can be considered to be periodontal plastic surgery. Often times, not matter how perfect the teeth, a smile is not as esthetic as it could be because of an uneven appearance of the gum line on the front teeth or an excessively "gummy" smile. In those instances where recession of the gum line has exposed too much of the tooth, atraumatic smile line surgery covers roots and extends tooth life.
